National 4-H Week

National 4-H Week is taking place October 7 - 13, 2012! Jones County 4-H has lots planned for that week : )
First the tee shirt design contest: All 4-Hers are encouraged to submit a design that will be judged. The winners in each age category will receive "cloverbucks" (all cloverbud entries will receive cloverbucks)! Then all the top designs will be judged for an overall winner to decide whose design will be put on the next Jones Co. 4-H tee shirt, the overall winner will receive their tee shirt for free!

Essay competition: All 4-Hers are encouraged to write an essay of at least 250 words on a favorite 4-H memory or what it means to you to be in 4-H. Essays can either be typed or handwritten, typed essays can be emailed to me! 


Entries for the two National 4-H Week competitions are due to me by Friday, October 5, so the winners can be announced during National 4-H Week! 


During National 4-H week we will be welcoming 2 new clubs to the 4-H family a cloverbud club for youth in grades K - 3 at Comfort Elementary School and club for middle school students at Jones Middle School! The cloverbud club will have their first meeting on Tues. Oct. 9 and the middle school club will have their first meeting on Thurs. Oct. 11. Very excited to have these two new groups :) 

Jones County 4-H will also be participating in the National 4-H Week Science Experiment - the Eco Bots! For details or to have the experiment at one of your club meetings, please contact Erin Morgan Jones Co. 4-H Agent! 

Don't forget the Coastal Carolina Agricultural Fair and State Fair will start during National 4-H Week! I am willing to take fair exhibits to the Coastal Carolina Ag. Fair for any 4-Her or volunteer wishing to enter items. Please have all items in my office by Tuesday, October 9, at 4:30pm! 

Good luck to all Jones Co. 4-H Livestock Club members who will be showing animals at the state fair! We know all of you will be great representatives of Jones Co. 4-H :)

Back to Business

Jones County 4-Hers thank you for an awesome summer! You all rocked at the competitions you participated in, were engaged in learning during all the summer workshops, and best of all we all had fun!! Be sure to like the Jones County 4-H facebook page to see all the pictures that have been posted.
Reminders
Clubs please be sure to get all your club members re-enrolled in your clubs this fall (remember the club year goes from Oct. 1 - Sept. 30).
County Council members we will be meeting at 3:30pm on Tuesday, September 11, at the Jones Co. Extension Office. Should you need a ride, please let me know ASAP!
Fund raisers - we will be participating in the Jones Co. Heritage Festival, by selling funnel cakes and Sportulas. This is your chance as a 4-Her to raise money for this year's events and activities! All youth who help will earn cloverbucks!
Be on the look out for our annual wreath sales - sales will start Oct. 1!
Fair Items - Anyone wishing to enter exhibits into the Coastal Carolina Fair are asked to have them in my office by Oct. 9! There is a wide variety of categories, so think about things you made this past summer, last school year, any drawings you have done, etc. I will take the exhibits over for you and bring them back!!
Clubs I encourage all of you to set up an educational display. By setting up a display you will earn $40, and if you win you could win up to $100!!! This is a great way to earn a little money for your club.
National 4-H Week - National 4-H Week is Oct. 7-13! Please be sure to read this section in the newest edition of the Jones Co. Clover Corner, to find out about the two competitions Jones Co. 4-H is conducting, along with the other activities. Clubs please let me know what you are doing to celebrate!!!

This Week

Summer is now in full swing! If you are signed up to participate in a 4-H summer adventure workshop and are unable to make it, please let the extension office know ASAP! We have a waiting list for almost every activity, so if you/your child is not able to make it please call the Jones County Extension Office at 252.448.9621!!!
Tomorrow the Gardening Adventures special interest club begins. All who are signed up, please plan to meet at 9am at the community garden, located beside the Health Department in Trenton.

Other activities this week are the annual 4-H District Activity Day, taking place this Friday at LCC in Kinston. All youth who are signed up to participate are asked to arrive at LCC around 10am on Friday. Should you need extra help on your presentation, please plan to stop by the Jones Co. Extension Office between 8am and 5pm this week.

Upcoming Events

On Wednesday, June 4, at 3pm the Jones County 4-H Council will meet at the Extension Office. All 4-Hers ages 12 + are invited to attend the meeting. During this meeting we will be discussing teen issues, to help those going to Citizenship Focus develop their action plan. Everyone's input is needed!

District Activity Day will be taking place on Friday, June 22, at LCC in Kinston. Anyone 4-Her planning to participate needs to let Erin Morgan - 4-H agent know by Friday, June 8 at noon. Ms. Erin will need to know your name, 4-H age (age as of Jan. 1), and category or presentation topic. For a complete list of presentation categories please see Ms. Erin!

Ms. Erin is in need of a couple of teens to help with Sibshop on Friday, June 15. Sibshop, a program by the Family Support Network, the purpose is to support youth who have siblings with disabilities. Ms. April Huston with the Family Support Network would like 4-H to provide activities such as games, science experiments, etc. for the youth who attend. The program only last from 6pm - 8pm, and dinner will be provided. Please let Ms. Erin know ASAP if you can help.

Summer calendars are out - please sign up early, several activities have already filled up.

Reminders

Any teen wishing to run for district office is reminded that applications to run are due to me by 5pm this Friday! If you need an application, please let me know ASAP. Remember to run for district office you have to have been involved in 4-H for at least two years prior to running, and be at least 14. If you have any questions, please let me know.

This Sat. (May 26) Jones Co. 4-H will be conducting a yard sale and car wash at the Jones County Extension Office from 7am - 11:30am. Any youth planning to attend 4-H Congress or camp is encouraged to attend to help raise money to offset the cost of these two events. Please arrive at the sale around 6:30am to help with set up and plan to be there until noon to help with clean up. Also don't forget to bring items to sell! Hope to see you all on Sat.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to all the Jones County 4-Hers who turned in project record books that went on to district competition! The following 4-Hers placed - Bryson Murrell - second in the Science and Technology Category, Hannah Stewart - second in the 9-10 Personal Development Category, Coleman Stewart in the 11-12 Science and Technology category, and Mary Downs first in the district and state with her 16-18 year old Horse cumulative record. Great job everyone, way to make Jones County 4-H shine :)

Reminders and such

When 2012 started I had not idea just how busy I would actually be!! Now that the end of April is near, here are a few reminders:

1) Operation Military Kids Creative Arts Competition (open to all 4-Hers ages 9-18, as of Jan. 1) is due by Monday, April 30. This competition gives youth across NC the opportunity to support the military and youth whose parents serve in the military, by drawing pictures or taking photographs with patriotic themes. For more details please contact me. 

2) NC 4-H Citizenship Focus Applications are due this week (preferably by 5pm today, Tuesday, April 24). I have to have enough time to look over them and sign them, before I mail them to the state office (due in state office by May 1). Teens 14 + (as of Jan. 1)

3) AIRE applications are due this week (by Friday, April 27), this is how you can earn your way to go to National 4-H Congress, or 4-H Conference (highly recommend). Teens 14 + (as of Jan. 1)

4) Health Rocks - any teen interested in going to the TRY (Teens Reaching Youth) training the weekend of May 18-20 (all expenses paid), to be trained in the Health Rocks curriculum (substance abuse prevention) needs to get their applications in this week (preferably by today). Teens 14 + (as of Jan. 1)

5) Practice AIRE competition open to youth ages 11-13 (as of Jan. 1), to get the experience of doing an interview and learning how to construct a resume, application is due this week. 

6) Science Day is being held on April 27, at the Jones Co. Civic Center, for students in grades 3-5. County Council members who are planning to help need to be at the Civic Center no later than 8:30am. If you need a ride to the civic center from your school, please have a note from your parents stating I can pick you up at 8:15am. Also if I am picking you up from school please be in your front office, ready to go, so I don't have to wait for you to be called out of class. I will return you to school at 2:30pm, unless you/your parents make arrangements ahead of time, to have you picked up at the civic center or my office.

8) Volunteer hours - the Jones County Health Department is having their annual Walk-A-Thon this Saturday (April 28) from 10am - noon. They are in need of volunteers to help with registration, to run the bounce house, and work water stations, if you can help, please let me know ASAP!

7) The Responsible You event will be held May 4, at the Jones Co. Civic Center for sixth and possibly seventh grade students, from 9am - 11am, if you volunteered to teach a station at that event, please be set up and ready to teach. Again for teens who are teaching if I need to pick you up from school, please have a note from your parent or guardian stating I can pick you up at 8:30am. I will return you to the school at 11:15am.
