Jones County 4-H will be offering two workshops this week while the kids are out of school! On Thursday, April 28, 2011 a gardening workshop will be offered from 9am - 12pm for youth ages 7 and up at the Jones County Extension Office located in Trenton. This is a free workshop where the youth will learn about starting a basic vegetable garden, growing seasons, methods of propagating plants, among other topics. Youth will have the opportunity to plant purple tomato seeds, divide/replant dill plants, take cuttings of mint, and learn about planting tomatoes and peppers. Each child who attends will get to take home a variety of plants to start their own gardens. For more information or to register your child please contact the Jones County Cooperative Extension Office at (252) 448-9621.
On Friday, April 29, 2011 youth in Jones County will have the opportunity to learn more about strawberries. During this workshop youth ages 8 and up will travel to Parkers Farm in Pollocksville to learn about their strawberry operation and to pick our own strawberries. After the berries have been picked we will travel back to the Extension Office to wash and process the berries. During this time the youth will make strawberry freezer jam and of course strawberry shortcake. Each child will take home a couple containers of jam to enjoy! This workshop is $8.00 to cover the cost of picking the berries and supplies for making the jam. Workshop goes from 1:15pm - 5pm. Please pre-register for this workshop so we can be sure to have transportation and supplies for each child!
